Martyr diplomat Mehmet Savaş Yergüz was commemorated in Geneva


The delegation of the Ministry, which is in Geneva to attend the 111th International Labour Conference, attended the commemoration ceremony for Mehmet Savaş Yergüz, a staff member of the Consulate General who was martyred by Asala terrorist organisation on 9 June 1981.

The ceremony hosted by İpek Zeytinoğlu Özkan, Consul General of Türkiye in Geneva, was attended by Emine Ece Özbayoğlu Acarsoy, Ambassador of Türkiye in Bern, Güven Begeç, Permanent Representative of Türkiye to the UN Office in Geneva, representatives of Turkish non-governmental organisations in Switzerland and other guests.

The programme started with a moment of silence and the reading of the National Anthem and continued with the reading of martyr Yergüz's biography. After the ceremony at the Consulate General, all participants went to the area where Yergüz was martyred in Geneva, laid a wreath and observed a minute of silence. Yergüz, Secretary of the Consulate General in Geneva, was shot and martyred in the middle of the street by Asala member terrorist Mardiros Jamkochyan on 9 June 1981 as he was leaving the Consulate General at the end of his working day and walking home.

Between 1973 and 1984, 41 Turkish diplomats, including personnel of our Ministry, public officials and family members were martyred in more than 90 attacks by Armenian terrorist organisations targeting Turkish diplomats abroad. Reşat Moralı, Deputy Labour and Social Security Counsellor in Paris, and Tecelli Arı, a staff member of the same office, were martyred on 4 March 1982 in Paris, and Erdoğan Özen, Social Assistant at the Vienna Labour and Social Security Counsellor's Office, was martyred on 20 June 1984 in Vienna.
